Monitoring Center

Our Volunteer Water Monitoring Data Center contains water quality data collected by Volunteer Monitoring Groups and schools from 20 watershed areas throughout the state of New Jersey. The database and information are managed and maintained by CIMIC, Rutgers University under the sponsorship from EPA.

The Data center provides Web-based data entry forms for the volunteer groups to enter their water quality data, and searching, reporting and graphing capabilities for the public, government agencies, and educators. It also provides information regarding volunteer water monitoring data collection methods, data quality management, and other related resources.

Ideas for Using Water Quality Data in the Classroom

  • Compare sites within a watershed or between watersheds .

  • Compare water quality parameters within one or numerous sites; research possible reasons why differences might occur (i.e. different habitat/ geology influences chemical parameters at each site).

  • Compare parameters along a single tributary; map how the tributary changes and how that relates to changes in water quality parameters.

  • Construct or refer to topographic maps of watershed and compare to respective parameters measured.

  • Follow water quality parameters over time and through seasons and years within a site, tributary, or watershed; how do sites different among seasons between watersheds?.

  • How do water quality parameters relate to the types of flora and fauna found at a site?
