Title:
Enhanced Metadata Extraction for NASA's Regional Application Center System

Abstract:

Metadata extraction is emerging as a powerful, interdisciplinary tool that will enable a large community of users (Earth scientists, for example) to perform efficient "data mining", i.e., search and analyze by content voluminous, remotely sensed data sets. Indeed, to prepare for the challenge of handling efficiently the archiving and (repeated) querying of terabyte-sized scientific spatial databases, the Applied Information Sciences Branch, Code 935, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, has pursued a number of methods for extracting (high-level) content (or "metadata") from remotely sensed imagery. The methods pursued focus, primarily, on (image) registration and (image) clustering/classification, and their development comprises an integral part of the overall evolution of the Regional Application Center (RAC) system, now available at a number of remote sensing sites. In this talk we will describe work in progress and outline a number of future research tasks that are aimed at enhancing the above image processing techniques, in the context of the RAC system.
