Critical Challenges to Urban Areas: Education, Health and Nutrition, Public Safety

U.S. cities confront many complex challenges. Children learn about their city, neighborhood and community from many sources. However, not all sources are optimally reputable or reliable. This program helps students develop and practice research and critical thinking skills and applications to make better informed decisions.

The 2-week summer program introduces students to technology-based problem solving using hands on computer laboratory experiences, lectures, field visits, and group presentations that address complex contemporary issues. Past programs addressed environmental problems such as water quality, urban smart growth, local animal biodiversity, decision support for scientific sensor data collection, crisis management, data analytics and information security and privacy.

The 2017 summer program theme is “ Challenges to Urban Areas.” Students will focus on three important subtopics: educa..on, health and nutri..on, and public safety.
