Online Security and Privacy

This year, our program will focus on learning the issues and practices related to "Online Security and Privacy." Our society has been transformed into digital data-driven, Information and Knowledge economy where data is collected, processed and analyzed, integrated, disseminated, shared and sold easily.

As an individual, we consume diverse online services, such as buying products, conducting online banking, consulting healthcare experts, connecting to friends and interacting with government services. These online activities leave crumbs of information about you, such as your identity, financial and social behaviors, your health issues, etc. This summer camp will address various topics of online privacy and security we face in the digital economy, and learn how to protect from privacy harms posed by online interaction with the organizations and individuals.

In particular, the summer campers will:

  • Discuss the online privacy and security threats, attacks and societal issues
  • Investigate online data collection, integration and sharing of personal data
  • Become aware of surveillance & sensor-driven society and privacy issues.
  • Acquire behaviors for privacy aware sharing on Social Media
  • Learn about the privacy laws and business policies and practices.
  • Get familiar with privacy-protecting technologies and tools.
  • Develop effective communication skills and professional presentations

During their time at the camp, students will learn and use computer applications and tools to conduct their study. Each student will have access to his/her own computer workstation. Instructors will help students to learn the necessary concepts and computer tools. Students will also have hands-on training in basic application software such as word processing, spreadsheets and a presentation application such as power point. They will learn how to interact with their colleagues through a problem-centered approach to learning.

On the last day of camp, students will have an opportunity to share their camp activities and experience with teachers, parents, relatives and friends through a multimedia presentation, which will be open to the public. The camp will run at the Rutgers University Newark campus from June 30th to July 11th from 8:30am to 12:30pm.
